At least 60 people were killed in Gaza from Monday night to Tuesday due to fresh Israeli attacks, according to Palestinian officials. The airstrikes hit homes, shelters, and refugee camps, causing major destruction and more loss of civilian lives.
Israel has launched another round of intense airstrikes, aiming to destroy Hamas militants and free hostages held by them. Among the dead were over 22 people in two separate strikes on a family home and a school-turned-shelter in northern Gaza, with more than half being women and children, said the Gaza Health Ministry.
In central Gaza’s Deir al-Balah, 13 people were killed, and another 15 died in the nearby Nuseirat refugee camp, according to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. Two more strikes in the southern city of Khan Younis claimed 10 lives, reported Nasser Hospital.
Though Israel hasn’t commented officially, its military usually claims to target only militants. It blames Hamas for civilian deaths as the group often operates from densely populated areas.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recently allowed a few aid trucks into Gaza for the first time in over two months. However, the UN says the supplies are far too little to meet the huge demand. Earlier this year, around 600 aid trucks were entering Gaza daily during a brief ceasefire.
The ongoing war began after Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Hamas still holds 58 captives, and only about a third are believed to be alive after multiple prisoner swaps.
Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that over 53,000 Palestinians have been killed so far, with a large number being women and children. The war has forced nearly 90% of Gaza’s population from their homes, many of them displaced more than once.
