Renowned Kannada poet, playwright, and lyricist HS Venkatesha Murthy passed away in Bengaluru on Friday at the age of 81. He had been facing age-related health problems.
A Modern Voice with Traditional Roots
Fondly known as HSV, HS Venkatesha Murthy was celebrated for his poetry that blended modern style with traditional themes. Many of his poems were turned into Bhaavageete, soulful songs that were a big part of the Kannada Sugama Sangeeta (light music) era. His popularity rose during the audio cassette era, earning him the title of a “cassette poet.”
From Parivrutta to Buddhacharana
HSV’s literary journey began in 1968 with his poetry collection Parivrutta. He continued writing for decades, with one of his most notable works being Buddhacharana (2020), a poetic retelling of the Buddha’s life and teachings.
Carving His Own Literary Path
Although he started in the shadow of Navya movement leader Gopalakrishna Adiga, HSV gradually developed his own unique voice. According to critic SR Vijayshankar, his style resonated more with poets like Pu.Thi. Narasimhachar and KS Narasimhaswamy, giving his work a distinct identity.
A Creative Force in Theatre and Children’s Literature
HSV was also a talented playwright, writing plays such as Uriya Uyyale, Agnivarna, and Manthare. He wrote passionately for children — crafting songs, rhymes, plays, and stories. His popular story Chinnari Mutha was adapted into a film that went on to win a National Award.
Filmmaker and Lyricist
In 2018, Murthy directed Hasiru Ribbon, a film inspired by an episode from his life. He also made significant contributions as a lyricist in Kannada films and television serials.
Memoirs and Life Reflections
Apart from creative works, HSV wrote memoirs and even an autobiography, offering readers a deep insight into his life journey and thoughts.

HS Venkatesha Murthy’s passing marks the end of an era in Kannada literature. His vast contributions — from poems and songs to plays and films — will remain a treasured part of Karnataka’s cultural legacy.
