May Mobility is taking a unique approach to deploying autonomous vehicles, focusing on on-demand shuttles and pooled rides instead of traditional robotaxi services. The company announced Wednesday that it has officially launched its first fully driverless commercial service in Peachtree Corners, Georgia, a city within the Atlanta metropolitan area. Later this year, May plans to integrate its autonomous vehicles with the Lyft app for broader accessibility.
Since September 2024, May Mobility has been operating a free on-demand autonomous shuttle service along Technology Parkway, a 3-mile road dedicated to AV testing in Peachtree Corners. However, until now, these rides have included a human safety operator. With the latest rollout, the company has removed the safety operator and begun charging for rides. This marks May Mobility’s third driverless deployment in the U.S. The company first launched an autonomous shuttle service in Sun City, Arizona, a retirement community, in December 2023. Nearly a year later, in November 2024, it introduced a small-scale deployment of autonomous shuttles in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
In Georgia, May’s service zone covers eight preset stops along Technology Parkway, connecting key destinations like hotels, retail centers, office buildings, and city hall. The area is known for its strong technology focus, with the Parkway serving as a 5G-enabled test track for autonomous vehicles. The road is part of the Curiosity Lab at Peachtree Corners, a city-run technology testing hub. Equipped with cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) technology, the area provides AVs with high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity to enable remote assistance.
Beep, another autonomous shuttle startup, has previously operated along the same route. TechCrunch has reached out to Beep for confirmation on whether its service is still active in Peachtree Corners. According to Peachtree Corners’ city manager, Brian Johnson, May Mobility aims to gradually expand its shuttle service toward the city’s town center. TechCrunch has inquired about ride pricing and the number of daily rides May Mobility has provided so far.
The shuttle service is available to the public Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Each vehicle, a Toyota Sienna Autono-MaaS, can accommodate up to five passengers. Riders can book trips to any of the eight stops through the May Mobility app, which operates on transit technology developed by Via.
With this latest driverless deployment, May Mobility continues to refine its strategy of providing autonomous, shared transportation in controlled environments, paving the way for broader AV adoption in urban areas.
