Police in Pyuthan’s Sarumarani Rural Municipality-2 have arrested two individuals for allegedly discarding a newborn’s body in a dustbin.
The incident came to light on Thursday morning when the baby’s body was discovered in a garbage collection bin. Following this, police began an investigation with the help of a trained dog.
According to DSP Dipesh Basyal of the District Police Office, Pyuthan, a teenage girl and boy were taken into custody on Thursday night. Their identities have not been disclosed since both are minors.
The investigation revealed that a 17-year-old girl, a ninth-grade student, confessed to discarding the baby. Medical tests indicated the baby had been born five to six days earlier and was already deceased at the time of disposal.
Based on the girl’s statement, police also arrested an 18-year-old boy. The Pyuthan District Court has granted an extension for further investigation.
The girl initially claimed she alone was responsible for the baby’s death. “She admitted to discarding the baby herself,” said Inspector Keshav KC, who is involved in the investigation. “Though the boy was not present during the baby’s death, it seems they were in contact.”
Police sources revealed that the girl’s father has passed away, and her mother works in Dubai. After her arrest, the girl explained that she initially thought she was gaining weight but later realized she was pregnant.
She gave birth to the baby at nine months and stated that the baby suffocated when she tried to silence its cries. The medical report confirming the time of birth is still pending.
The girl is currently receiving treatment at the District Hospital in Bijuwar, as she has not yet fully recovered from childbirth.
Further investigations revealed that the girl is originally from Shitganga Municipality in Arghakhanchi and had been staying with relatives for her studies. The boy is a resident of Sarumarani Rural Municipality. Police are continuing their investigation, DSP Basyal said.
