Nepali Congress MP Jit Jung Basnet has strongly criticized the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Unified Socialist Party, questioning whether they have the moral standing to lecture others on ethics.
Speaking at Thursday’s National Assembly meeting, Basnet pointed out that the RSP chairman is currently in jail and the Unified Socialist Party leader is facing a corruption case, yet both continue to hold top party and parliamentary positions. He asked how parties with such issues could be taken seriously when they speak about morality.
He said morality must be practiced personally before preaching it to others. “How can a party whose president is in prison and another whose leader is accused by the anti-corruption body still claim to represent moral leadership?” he asked.
Basnet emphasized that good moral character is essential to run a country properly. He argued that anyone speaking about ethics must first lead by example. “First fix your own values—only then can you teach others.”
His speech has sparked fresh debate over the political accountability of Nepal’s newer and emerging parties, especially at a time when corruption and trust in leadership are under public scrutiny.
