Renowned Novelist Shreedhar Khanal ‘Dirghabahu’ Passes Away at 94

Renowned Journalist and Novelist Shreedhar Khanal, popularly known as “Dirghabahu,” has passed away.

His son, Brajesh Khanal, informed that he passed away this morning at the age of 94.

His first novel, Shabda Bhedi Ladai, was published in 2022 BS (1965 AD). Following that, he wrote several novels in the Inspector Kharel series, including Murkata Laas (The Headless Corpse), Chha Aaule Manche (The Sixth Person), Panko Gulam (The Slave of Betel Leaf), and Doctor Demon.

Similarly, in the Detective Kamalraj Rupakheti series, he authored titles such as Major Ko Sarpa (The Major’s Snake), Bikhalu Ichchhapatra (The Poisonous Will), Baarha Bajeko Ghanti (The Midnight Bell), Venus Kaa Hippi Haru (The Hippies of Venus), and Nangiyeki Sundari (The Naked Beauty).

He also wrote spy novels in the Ram Maharjan series, such as Hongkong Ko Byapari (The Hong Kong Merchant), Helambu Ki Apsara (The Angel of Helambu), and Gulafi Pin (The Pink Pin).

A lifelong founding member of the Nepal Eye Hospital, he was also a member of Tribhuvan University’s Academic Council.

According to family sources, his last rites will be performed today at Pashupati Aryaghat.
