Officer Suspended for Assaulting Youth in Chitwan

A police officer has been suspended for assaulting a young man during a vehicle check on the bypass road section of Bharatpur Metropolitan City in Chitwan. The officer has been suspended, and further action is being initiated.

A video showing the officer kicking and beating the young man, allegedly to demonstrate “superior power,” went viral, prompting the police to form an investigation committee to take action.

According to SP Gautam Mishra of the District Police Office, Chitwan, the accused officer is Assistant Sub-Inspector Buddhi Bahadur Gharti Bhujel, who was stationed at the Ganeshsthan post. Mishra stated that the officer was suspended for acting against police conduct. The incident reportedly occurred on the 15th of Poush (December 30).

The person who was assaulted is believed to be from the Bhojad area of Bharatpur, based on preliminary information. Efforts are underway to locate him, said Chitwan Police Chief Mishra.

Investigation Committee Formed

A five-member investigation committee, led by DSP Gyan Kumar Mahato, has been formed to probe the incident.

The Police Headquarters in Kathmandu has also expressed serious concern over the incident of the young man being assaulted. After the video of the incident was made public, the headquarters issued a statement, confirming that disciplinary action has been initiated against the involved personnel.
