Thalapathy Vijay

Popular Tamil actor Thalapathy Vijay is caught in a heated religious and political controversy after attending an iftar party hosted by his political party in Chennai on March 7. While the event was intended to celebrate Ramadan, it has sparked criticism from several Muslim religious groups.

Religious Leader Issues Fatwa Against Thalapathy Vijay

According to India Today, a fatwa has been issued against Vijay by Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, National President of the All India Muslim Jamaat and Chief Mufti of Chashme Darul Ifta. The cleric accused Vijay of disrespecting Islam, calling him “anti-Muslim” and saying his actions were politically driven.

The fatwa specifically criticized the presence of “alcoholics and gamblers” at the iftar, labeling the event both “illegal” and “sinful.” Maulana Razvi warned Muslims in Tamil Nadu not to support or involve Vijay in any religious programs.

Allegations Over Past Film and Political Ambitions

Maulana Razvi also brought up Vijay’s past film Beast, accusing it of portraying Muslims as terrorists and extremists. He claimed, “Vijay is using Muslim sentiments to gain political mileage as he eyes an entry into politics.”

“His history shows an anti-Muslim mindset, and now he wants Muslim votes,” the cleric added. He urged the community to avoid inviting Vijay to any future religious gatherings.

Chennai Complaint Adds Fuel to the Fire

The controversy intensified when the Tamil Nadu Sunnah Jamath filed a police complaint in Chennai on March 11. The group alleged that the iftar party, organized by Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) at YMCA Grounds, included people who had no connection with Islam or fasting.

According to the Jamath’s treasurer, Syed Kous, “Muslims were insulted at the Iftar event. The presence of people with no respect for our religion was humiliating.” He added that they weren’t looking for publicity but wanted action to be taken so such incidents don’t happen again.

Vijay Joins Iftar, Stays Silent Amid Controversy

During the iftar party, Vijay wore a traditional skull cap, participated in evening prayers, and broke his fast with the attendees. Despite the uproar, he has yet to comment publicly on the fatwa or the police complaint.

Political Move Ahead?

Vijay is expected to contest in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections. While he remains silent on the current issue, his recent political and public appearances suggest he’s getting ready for a bigger political role.

On the film front, Vijay was last seen in The Greatest of All Time (The GOAT), directed by Venkat Prabhu.
