A major water pipe burst near Thapathali Chowk early this morning, leading to the wastage of approximately 500,000 liters of drinking water.
According to Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL), the leakage was controlled quickly, preventing further loss. However, a significant amount of water had already been wasted.
The pipe burst at around 5 AM, causing flooding in nearby shops and damaging the road. Stones, mud, and gravel were scattered across the street, temporarily blocking traffic. Cleanup and repairs in the affected area have now been completed.
The exact cause of the burst is still unknown. However, since the asphalt road cracked due to the water pressure, experts suspect high water pressure might be the reason.
Following the incident, Water Supply Minister Pradip Yadav directed concerned authorities to repair the pipeline immediately, aiming to restore supply by the evening.
This is not the first such incident. On February 12 (Magh 30), a similar pipe burst in Babarmahal led to the wastage of 1 million liters of Melamchi water. However, this time, the issue was resolved more quickly, reducing the water loss.
