Karan confessed that he feels happy when films such as Stree 2 and Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi work well at the box office.

Filmmaker Karan Johar recently emphasized the growing importance of understanding gender representation in films. In a recent interview, he highlighted that female-led movies are now consistently outshining male-led films at the box office, a trend that can no longer be ignored. He mentioned that he feels proud when films like Stree 2 and Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt, perform well commercially.

In a conversation on Lilly Singh’s podcast, Karan was asked about the significance of being sensitive to gender politics in cinema. He explained, “Cinema is meant to entertain and offer a visual spectacle, but it’s important to avoid promoting incorrect gender politics or social norms. A movie can be successful without spreading harmful messages. While no external censorship can fix this, filmmakers must practice self-censorship. A film may become a hit, but if it communicates the wrong message, is that really a win?”

Karan was particularly pleased with Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, calling it a major achievement. He said, “Alia’s performance in Gangubai was driven entirely by her talent, and it opened to much bigger numbers than many films led by male stars. This is a huge sign that women can lead films just as successfully.” He also pointed out that while male actors often claim they should be paid more due to their box office pull, we’re now seeing women-led movies doing better than some big male stars’ films, which is a significant shift.

As for what’s next for Karan, he’s currently working on his upcoming project Nadaaniyan, which will mark the debut of Saif Ali Khan’s son, Ibrahim Ali Khan, in the film industry. Ibrahim will star opposite Khushi Kapoor in the movie, set for a Netflix release. Nadaaniyan will also be the directorial debut of Shauna Gautam, who worked as an assistant director on Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani.

Karan’s latest production, Jigra, which he co-produced with Alia Bhatt and featured her in the lead role, unfortunately didn’t perform well at the box office.
