Supreme Court Sends New Letter Urging Release of Resham Chaudhary

The Supreme Court has issued a fresh letter requesting the immediate release of Resham Chaudhary from custody.

According to Court spokesperson Achyut Kuinkel, the letter was dispatched to inform concerned authorities that the previous document used as the basis for Chaudhary’s detention was not an official Supreme Court letter.

Following an internal investigation, the Court directed the prison administration and police not to act upon the earlier letter. In the new communication, the Supreme Court clarified that the previous letter—sent to Dillibazar Prison regarding case number 19277, dated 2082/1/17—was unofficial and therefore invalid.

The letter reads: “The letter addressed to Dillibazar Prison regarding keeping Resham Lal Chaudhary in custody is not an official document of this Court. If Resham Lal Chaudhary, son of Lalbir Chaudhary from Janaki Rural Municipality Ward No. 6 (formerly Durgouli VDC-8), Kailali, has been detained based on that letter, he should be released immediately.”

This latest move by the Supreme Court reinforces that no legal grounds currently exist to continue Resham Chaudhary’s detention.
